The stamped receiver of the AKM significantly reduced production cost compared to earlier milled designs. The AKMS variant added a folding stock, making it particularly suitable for paratroopers, armored vehicle crews, and special units requiring a more compact weapon. Throughout the Cold War, the AKMS was widely produced and exported, becoming one of the most recognizable folding-stock assault rifles of the 20th century.
