Beretta Model 57

"Submachine gun / Carbine-class SMG" “More punch than a pistol-caliber SMG.” Beretta Model 57 The Beretta Model 57 is an Italian submachine gun developed in the late 1950s. While most commonly associated with 9×19mm Parabellum, certain versions were chambered in . 30 Carbine — the same cartridge used in the M1 Carbine. The weapon operates on a simple blowback system and fires from an open bolt. When chambered in . 30 Carbine, it offered increased range and penetration compared to typical pistol-caliber submachine guns of the time, placing it somewhere between a traditional SMG and a light carbine in terms of ballistic performance. Key features: Chambered in . 30 Carbine (in specific variants) Blowback operation Open-bolt firing Heavy steel construction Extended effective range compared to 9mm SMGs Historical Background The Model 57 was developed by Beretta as a post-WWII evolution of earlier Beretta submachine guns, particularly the Model 38 series. The . 30 Carbine variant reflected a period of experimentation during the Cold War, when manufacturers explored intermediate-power cartridges to increase effective range and penetration without fully transitioning to assault rifle platforms. Although solid and reliable, the Model 57 did not achieve widespread international success and was gradually overshadowed by lighter and more modern designs.
