"Standard Swiss Service Rifle" “Precision forged in the Alps.” SIG SG 550 The SIG SG 550 is a Swiss 5. 56×45mm NATO assault rifle developed in the late 1970s and adopted by the Swiss Armed Forces in 1990 as their standard service rifle. Engineered for reliability in harsh alpine environments, the SG 550 features a long-stroke gas piston system with a rotating bolt — a design inspired in part by the Kalashnikov system, but refined with Swiss precision manufacturing standards. The rifle is known for its: Exceptional build quality Cold hammer-forged barrel Diopter drum rear sight system Folding skeletonized stock Transparent polymer magazines that can be clipped together Historical Background The SG 550 was developed by the Swiss company SIG Sauer as a replacement for the older Stgw 57 battle rifle, which was chambered in 7. 5×55mm Swiss. Design work began in the 1970s, resulting in the SG 540 prototype series. After refinement and military trials, the final version was adopted as the Sturmgewehr 90 (Stgw 90). The rifle gained international recognition for its accuracy, durability, and high manufacturing standards. It also served as the foundation for the entire SG 55x family, including compact variants such as the SG 551 and SG 553. Although relatively expensive compared to many service rifles, the SG 550 is widely respected as one of the finest examples of European assault rifle engineering.
