L85A2

"Standard British Service Rifle" “Compact design, full-length punch.” L85A2 The L85A2 is a 5. 56×45mm NATO bullpup assault rifle and the improved second-generation variant of the British SA80 family. It serves as the standard service rifle of the United Kingdom’s armed forces. Designed in a bullpup configuration (with the action and magazine located behind the trigger), the L85A2 achieves a full-length barrel in a compact overall profile. The rifle operates via a gas-operated, rotating bolt system and feeds from standard STANAG magazines. Historical Background The original L85A1 was adopted by the British Army in the 1980s as part of the SA80 (Small Arms for the 1980s) program. However, early service revealed serious reliability issues, particularly under harsh field conditions. In the late 1990s, the rifle underwent a major upgrade program conducted by Heckler & Koch, which at the time was owned by BAE Systems. The result was the L85A2 variant. Key improvements included: Redesigned bolt and extractor Improved gas system components Strengthened internal parts Increased overall durability and reliability Following these modifications, the L85A2 proved significantly more dependable and saw extensive service in conflicts such as Iraq and Afghanistan. It later evolved further into the L85A3 with modernized furniture and rail systems. Today, the L85A2 is recognized as a distinctively British service rifle and a notable example of the bullpup configuration in modern military service.
