SIG SG-553 R

"Compact Assault Rifle" “Swiss precision meets Eastern firepower.” SIG SG 553 R The SIG SG 553 R is a compact Swiss assault rifle chambered in 7. 62×39mm, developed as part of the renowned SG 55x rifle family. It is manufactured by SIG Sauer and represents a modernized export-oriented evolution of earlier SG 550 series rifles. Designed as a shorter, more compact variant of the SG 550 platform, the 553 R retains the family’s long-stroke gas piston system with a rotating bolt, ensuring high reliability under adverse conditions. The “R” designation indicates compatibility with the widely used 7. 62×39mm cartridge, allowing the rifle to accept standard AK-pattern magazines. The rifle features: Compact barrel length Folding stock Full-length Picatinny rail Modernized ergonomics Ambidextrous controls Historical Background The SG 550 series was originally developed in the 1980s as Switzerland’s service rifle. Over time, export demands led to the development of more compact and caliber-diverse variants. The SG 553 platform was introduced as a shortened commando-style version. The 553 R variant was later created to meet international demand for a rifle chambered in 7. 62×39mm, particularly for users operating in regions where that cartridge and AK-pattern magazines are widely available. Although not adopted as Switzerland’s standard service rifle, the SG 553 R has been used by military and law enforcement units internationally and is valued for combining Swiss engineering precision with the ballistic characteristics of a traditional intermediate cartridge.
