PPD 30

"Early Soviet Submachine Gun" “The beginning of Soviet automatic firepower.” PPD-30 (Pistolet-Pulemyot Degtyaryova 1930) was one of the earliest Soviet submachine guns, chambered in 7. 62×25mm Tokarev. Designed by Vasily Degtyaryov, it marked the Soviet Union’s first serious step toward adopting a domestically produced submachine gun for military service. The PPD-30 operated using a simple blowback system and fired from an open bolt. Early versions were fitted with a wooden stock and typically used 25-round box magazines, though later developments in the series introduced drum magazines. Its relatively high rate of fire and compact dimensions made it suitable for close-quarters combat, though early production was limited due to manufacturing complexity and cost. Brief historical background: Adopted in 1930, the PPD-30 reflected the growing global interest in submachine guns following World War I. However, Soviet military doctrine initially prioritized rifles and machine guns, leading to limited early production. Operational experience—especially during the Winter War against Finland (1939–1940)—demonstrated the effectiveness of submachine guns in close combat. This experience ultimately paved the way for later refinements such as the PPD-34/38 and PPD-40, and influenced the development of the more mass-produced PPSh-41.
