Colt Delta Elite

"Service / Defensive 1911 Pistol" “Classic steel. Modern balance.” Colt Delta Elite (. 40 S&W version) is a 1911-pattern semi-automatic pistol adapted for the . 40 Smith & Wesson cartridge. While the original Delta Elite was introduced in 10mm Auto, certain variants and conversions have been configured for . 40 S&W, offering a balance between power and controllability. Built on the classic single-action 1911 platform, the pistol features a steel frame, single-stack magazine, grip safety, and manual thumb safety. Chambering it in . 40 S&W provides reduced recoil and slightly softer handling compared to full-power 10mm Auto, while still delivering strong defensive ballistics. This makes it appealing for shooters who want a 1911-style handgun with modern service-caliber performance in a more manageable package. Brief historical background: The Delta Elite was introduced in 1987 by Colt's Manufacturing Company as one of the first major-production 1911 pistols in 10mm Auto. In the early 1990s, the . 40 S&W cartridge emerged as a shorter, lower-recoil alternative derived from reduced-power 10mm loads developed for law enforcement. Some Delta Elite pistols were later adapted or converted to . 40 S&W, combining the iconic 1911 platform with one of the most widely adopted law enforcement calibers of the late 20th century.
