"Standard Service Assault Rifle" “Spain’s step into the 5. 56 NATO era.” CETME-L is a Spanish assault rifle developed in the late 1970s by CETME as a lightweight, modern infantry weapon chambered in 5. 56×45mm NATO. Designed to replace older 7. 62mm battle rifles, it reflected the global shift toward smaller-caliber, high-velocity ammunition and more compact service rifles. The CETME-L features a roller-delayed blowback system, derived from earlier CETME and G3 designs, combined with a polymer receiver to reduce weight. The rifle is selective-fire, feeds from STANAG magazines, and was intended to provide improved handling and controllability for mechanized and airborne units. Historical background: CETME-L was officially adopted by the Spanish Armed Forces in the 1980s and served as Spain’s standard service rifle for several decades. Despite its modern concept, the rifle gained a mixed reputation due to reliability issues in harsh conditions. Eventually, it was phased out and replaced by the Heckler & Koch G36, marking the end of CETME-designed rifles in frontline Spanish service.
