History (From Wikipedia): Designed by Assistant Chief Engineer Howell "Pete" Miller and Zantford "Granny" Granville with the assistance from aeronautical engineering professor Alexander Klemin in 1932, GeeBee R series super sporter was a record setting racing plane made by Granville Brothers Aircraft of Springfield, Massachusetts. Gee Bee stands for Granville Brothers. The aircraft was basically a plane bolted to an engine. Designed around the giant Pratt & Whitney R-1340 Wasp 22L engine with nothing to spare, the plane looked hilariously fat and stubby. However, its performance was nothing to be laughed at. At the time, it was crowned the fastest land plane capable of a top speed of 294. 38 mph or 473. 8 km/h. Although the plane was well liked by pilots due to its insane speed and high speed performance, its high stalling speed and poor visibility made it a dangerous plane to land. A catastrophic crash of R1 that killed its pilot lead to the installation of flaps on the subsequent GeeBee R2 which greatly improved the landing characteristics.
