KOTOR II Borderless Proxy
Description
Drop two files into your KOTOR II folder and the game runs borderless on a modern monitor. This mod replaces the game's dinput8.dll with a small proxy: it passes all input through to Windows as usual, reshapes the game window for borderless fullscreen, and can skip the BioWare and Obsidian logo screens on startup. Made for the Steam version of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords.
Other dinput8 mods I could find do not include borderless windowing for KOTOR II, and universal tools like Special K bring a lot of unneeded overhead. This is built specifically for KOTOR II TSL.
Window layout is applied once at startup, after the engine's window has been visible and stable for roughly 2 seconds. There is no hot-reload — you must fully quit and relaunch after changing resolution, mode, or size-related settings.
Compatibility
Built and tested on the latest Steam version (swkotor2.exe) only. Not tested on GOG, disc, or older Steam builds.
-
Disable the Discord overlay
[]Settings → Game Overlay = Off [/]
[]Settings → Registered Games → Turn off Toggle detection and Toggle overlay[/]
If the game still crashes after disabling overlays, set EnableLog=1 in dinput8.ini and check dinput8.log next to swkotor2.exe. On a hard crash the proxy also writes a timestamped .dmp minidump in the same folder.
Installation
-
[]Disable the Discord overlays for swkotor2.exe (see above).[/]
[]Download and extract the mod. You need dinput8.dll and dinput8.ini.[/]
[]Copy both files into your KOTOR II game folder — the same folder as swkotor2.exe:
...\steamapps\common\Knights of the Old Republic II\[/]
[]Optionally edit dinput8.ini to change mode, alignment, or other options (see Configuration below).[/]
[]Launch the game normally through Steam.[/]
You must fully quit and restart the game after:
-
[]Changing in-game resolution[/]
[]Changing Width or Height in dinput8.ini[/]
[]Switching Mode or any other size-affecting option in dinput8.ini[/]
Configuration (dinput8.ini)
All settings go in the section in dinput8.ini, placed next to swkotor2.exe.
Mode - controls the display mode (default: Fill)
-
[]Fill - keeps the engine's configured resolution and fills the rest of the monitor with a black backdrop (letterboxing/pillarboxing).[/]
[]NoFill - same engine resolution and Alignment as Fill, but no black backdrop. The desktop is visible in the letterbox area.[/]
[]Windowed - Just normal windowed mode where you can drag around the game; no window or INI changes are made by the proxy.[/]
swkotor2.ini
You do not need to hand-edit swkotor2.ini for borderless setup. When ForceWindowed=1 (the default), the proxy updates it automatically at each launch before the engine reads it. AKA just leave it alone.
Set the game's render resolution once through the in-game options menu. The proxy reads that value from swkotor2.ini and keeps the engine rendering at that size. Only add Width/Height to dinput8.ini if you want the proxy to override those keys explicitly.
