Moravia land banner (with eagle)

A variant of the banner of Moravia in land colors with moravian eagle added onto it. Around the 19th century the individual lands of Austria–Hungary began to use land banners in colors of their coat of arms. The Moravian banner takes its colors from a symbol of Moravian estates – a gold-red checkered eagle (opposed to white-red checkered eagle of margrave of Moravia). This symbol was granted to them in 1462 by emperor Frederick III. for their help against a revolt, but it was rarely used. Only in the 19th century the moravian estates and landtag (provincial parliament) pressed on the usage of the gold-red eagle and its adoption as an official symbol of Moravia. The gold-red land banner was created sometime before 1818 and was used during the whole 19th century. The land banners officially ceased to be used in 1920, when a modern flag of Czechoslovakia was created, but unofficially they are still used to modern times.
