Distant Smoke and Fire

I never liked how, when walking through a town or approaching a lonely house, chimney smoke would suddenly start appearing right in front of my eyes — as if the residents only began heating their homes when I got close. The same thing annoyed me with campfires suddenly bursting into flames and producing smoke just a few meters away. I couldn’t find any vanilla engine settings to fix this.

This mod increases the draw distance for chimney smoke, campfire smoke, campfire flames, and torch flames. You can see the difference in the showcase video.

The mod edits the file libs\particles\wh_particels.xml

, which makes it incompatible with other mods that modify the same file, unless you manually merge the changes.

Changes made:

• []smokes.chimney — CameraMaxDistance="120" → 250

  []smokes.chimney.left — 80 → 250

  []smokes.chimney.right — 90 → 250

  []fires.torch_trailer.fire_center — 20 → 75

  []fires.torch_trailer.torch_ball — 20 → 65

  []fires.exterior_fireplace — 20 → 75

On my system (i7-13700k, RTX 4090) I didn’t notice any performance drops, though I assume there still might be some impact on lower-end hardware.
