📋 About This Mod
Reworks theft attribution logic. Crimes discovered without witnesses are still treated as crimes, but are no longer automatically attributed to the player.
Since the crime system is a complex, modular system that operates on multiple levels and supports various scenarios, there were difficulties in testing complex and long-term scenarios. Because of this, the mod is currently in an experimental stage.
I recommend remembering the last save before using the mod so that you can roll back in case of undesirable consequences.
I believe many players who enjoyed the theft system in KCD 1 immediately tried to rob someone’s house in the second game part to get their first money. That’s exactly what I did as well in Troskowitz, when I robbed the room where Scribe Gaibl was sitting. Everything felt as usual, and I was even surprised at how easy it was—until one in-game day later, the game informed me that the guards knew I was a thief. I completed the game with the vanilla crime system, but this situation still pushed me to create a mod that changes how the crime system works.
Goal:
completely disable accusations against the player for thefts that NPCs did not witness with their own eyes.
It was important to me to preserve as much of the vanilla logic and NPC reactions to missing items as possible. A key task was to ensure that the entire reaction flow to a theft follows the standard logic (panic, calling guards, investigation), except for the moment when the system decides that the player is the thief and applies specific negative consequences.
Main changes:
- NPCs do not link the player to items missing from chests (this applies to scheduled daily chest checks, chest checks after an item goes missing from a private area, and chest checks after you were seen in a restricted area).
- NPCs do not link the player to items missing from private areas (for example, items lying on shelves in private property).
- NPCs do not link the player to items stolen from pockets.
- NPCs do not react if they see you wearing stolen clothing.
- Unnoticed thefts have no negative consequences, such as the threat of fines/prison, aggressive NPC behavior, or searching for the player.
Please note that the mod does not affect any criminal actions except thefts, and does not affect thefts, which NPCs witness with their own eyes. Its effect applies only to unnoticed thefts.
Possible issues:
- In some cases, the system may still assign a player a crime if you steal several items from a private area and are very close (within the same room) to the crime scene at the moment an NPC notices the theft.
- After a noticed theft, a
