Every line of spoken dialogue gets a second language on the line

underneath, dimmed, so the one you play in reads first. Made for

people learning a language while they play.

You choose both:

top line    the language the game is set to

second line  the language you are learning, in grey

Five languages, 20 combinations, about 9,000 spoken lines and 2,700

lines of mission text in each one.

All five already ship with the game - English, French, German,

Italian and Spanish are on every copy of San Andreas. Nothing is

bundled and no game text is inside this download.

---------------- BEFORE YOU START ------------------------------

You need Python. It is free, from python.org, and you install it once:

WINDOWS  https://www.python.org/downloads/ -> the big yellow

"Download Python" button. In its installer, TICK THE BOX

"Add python.exe to PATH" before clicking Install.

LINUX    you almost certainly have it. If not:

Ubuntu / Debian / Mint  sudo apt install python3

Fedora / Nobara          sudo dnf install python3

Arch / CachyOS          sudo pacman -S python

Steam Deck already has it - use Desktop Mode.

This mod is one Python file. It downloads nothing and installs

nothing on your PC. Everything it does is to the game's own files,

and it can put those back exactly as they were.

Nothing else. No IMG tool, no script hook, no mod manager, no other

program. San Andreas keeps its text in five plain files in its text

folder, and this edits one of them, keeping a copy first.

---------------- INSTALL ---------------------------------------

1. Close the game.

2. Unzip this download somewhere you can find again. Keep the

files together.

3. Open a command window IN that folder:

WINDOWS  click the white address bar at the top of the folder

window, type  cmd  and press Enter.

LINUX    right-click inside the folder -> "Open Terminal Here".

4. Type this and press Enter:

WINDOWS  python dualsub_installer.py

LINUX    python3 dualsub_installer.py

5. The first time only, it asks where the game is. Paste the

folder that holds gta_sa.exe - or drag that folder onto the

window. It usually finds it by itself.

6. Answer three questions: which language you play in, which one

you are learning, and where it should appear. Press Enter to

take the defaults.

7. Start the game. Options -> Language, and pick the one you chose

as the top line. That is what loads the mod's text.

IF WINDOWS SAYS IT CANNOT WRITE TO THE GAME FILES, the game is in

Program Files and needs administrator rights:

Click Start, type  cmd

Right-click "Command Prompt" -> "Run as administrator"

Type  cd /d  then a space, then drag the unzipped folder onto

the window, then press Enter

Then:  python dualsub_installer.py

Games on another drive usually do not need this at all.

---------------- REMOVE ----------------------------------------

Run the installer again the same way and press  R .

It puts the file back exactly as it was and removes its own record.

If something else has changed that file since the install, it leaves

it alone and tells you so.

---------------- WHERE THE SECOND LANGUAGE APPEARS -------------

Step 3 lists the parts of the game. Each is set to one of three

both  the language you play in, with the other one under it

only  the other language on its own, in place of the first

off    left exactly as the game shipped it

Type a number to move that line on: both -> only -> off -> both.

Two start on "both":

the spoken lines - subtitles under conversations

mission text - objectives, counters, hints

One starts off:

* menus and names - clothes, places, weapons, menus

That one is off for a reason. A key in these files is a number, not

a name, so nothing inside the file says which entries are a shirt's

name and which are prose. Turning it on doubles both, and a doubled

clothing name in the shop
