📋 About This Mod
Learn a language while you play. This mod shows TWO subtitle languages at once: your normal language on top, and a second language on the line below; for every piece of spoken dialogue and every in-game document, memo, and item description.
DualSub for Grand Theft Auto III
The Definitive Edition
======================================================================
Two subtitle languages on screen at once. The one you play in on top,
the one you are learning underneath, in grey.
You weren't followed? Good.
¿No te siguieron? Bien.
You already know this story. That is the point: you are never lost,
so you can spend your attention on the second line instead.
WHAT YOU NEED
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Python 3. Nothing else. No other program, no downloads, nothing to
unpack into the game folder.
Windows does not come with Python. Get it from python.org, and on the
first screen of the installer tick "Add python.exe to PATH".
HOW TO PUT IT ON
----------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Put dualsub_installer.py anywhere you like. Next to the game is
convenient but it does not have to be.
2. Double-click it. If that opens an editor instead, right-click it
and choose "Open with" -> Python.
3. It will look for the game. If it cannot find it, paste in the
folder that holds PlayGTA3.exe.
4. Answer three questions:
which language you PLAY in the one you already follow
which language you LEARN the one that goes underneath
which lines get both speech, pager, mission text,
5. It writes one file and tells you it is done. That takes about a
6. Start the game and set its own Language option to the language you
said you play in. That is what decides which of the two is on top.
THE THIRTEEN LANGUAGES
----------------------------------------------------------------------
English Polish Japanese
German Portuguese (BR) Korean
Spanish Russian Chinese (Simplified)
Spanish (LatAm) French Chinese (Traditional)
All of them are already inside your copy of the game. Nothing is
downloaded and nothing is bundled with this. Any one of them can go
with any other -- all 156 combinations work, including Japanese,
Korean and both Chinese as the language you are learning, because the
installer points the game's own face for that language at the second
THE FOUR KINDS OF LINE
----------------------------------------------------------------------
the spoken lines what characters say, in a mission or a
the phone and the pager the pager messages
the mission text your objectives, the warnings, and the
tutorial help
the menus and the rest menus, statistics, credits, car and place
The first three are on. The menus are off, because a doubled menu is
mostly in the way. Turn any of them on or off in step 3.
Each one can also be set to show the language you are learning ON ITS
OWN, with no English above it. That is for when you are further along
and want to be thrown in.
A note on this game in particular. Grand Theft Auto III's text is one
flat list with nothing in it that says "this line is spoken" -- Vice
City added that a year later. So the split above is made from the way
Rockstar wrote the keys and the colour codes, and it is very good but
it is not perfect: a handful of on-screen messages ride along with the
speech, and some of the tutorial help sits with the menus. Nothing is
ever mistranslated by it; a line only ever ends up under the wrong
TAKING IT OFF
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Run it again and press R.
Nothing the game came with is ever changed, moved or renamed. The
whole install is one file in a folder called ~mods that the game did
not have before, so removing it is deleting that file. If something
else has replaced it since, it is left alone and you are told.
IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows will not let it write
Close the game and the Rockstar launcher. If the game is under
Program Files, open the command window as administrator and run it
from there.
The second line is not there
Check the game's own Language option is set to the language you
