The Mahan-Class ships were built from 1934-37 and served from 1936-46. Mahan was laid down on 12 June, 1934. She was part of a screening fleet for USS Lexington during the bombing of Pearl Harbour. Mahan participated in various escort and screening duties in the Pacific Theatre, participating in the Battle of The Santa Cruz Island in USS Enterprise's screening fleet. Mahan was sunk during a patrol off Leyte Island in 7 December 1944, when she was attacked by 12 Japanese bombers and hit thrice by kamikaze attacks.
