Vault Boy in the High Castle - FO3 Intro Addendum

This mod modifies the intro video in Fallout 3 by appending the video below to play before the intro itself.

We really liked this trailer mashup by Zeb Ekeroth of Fallout (with elements from Fallout 3, 4, and New Vegas) and the TV show based on the book, Man in the High Castle, which depicts an alternate reality where the Nazis won World War II. There are some parallels between that and the alternate reality Fallout depicts, where America's 50's vision of a Ray Gun Gothic or Art Deco future came to pass and fizzle, though many significant differences exist. This video, however, really captures the visuals of Fallout while retaining the mood from the other. We feel thismood and aesthetic can just be applied to Fallout. It gives you a dark, somber, thematic feel before your exposition dump in the intro.

Zeb Ekeroth gave us permission to convert his video for use as a mod. We made a few alterations where we felt necessary:

• []We appended the video before the intro to avoid having to use plugins at all. It also means there should be no conflicts with anything at all, unless they alter the intro video file itself.

  []While most shots were of generic Fallout content, we cut a shot with Nick Valentine, because he is a character exclusive to Fallout 4. Vault, Power Armor, and NCR iconography are all fine, but we felt he didn't belong.

  []We removed the audio from the theme music of Man in the High Castle to avoid issues with copyright.

  []We replaced the audio with America the Beautiful, a track that is already found within Fallout 3 itself.

  []We adjusted the timing to flow with the new music better.

  []Since we had to append the video to the intro, we had to re-encode the intro. This means a loss in quality is inevitable. We tried to keep the bit rate high to minimize the loss in quality.

  []Since we were re-encoding anyway, we up-scaled the intro to a 1920x1080 resolution to keep it in line with the appended video.

  []To counteract the blurriness in up-scaling the intro from its native 1280x720 resolution, we sharpened the focus slightly, just enough to make the intro clearer and hopefully counteract the loss in quality from re-encoding.

  []The end result is that, not only do you get the video appended, but the intro has been refit for 1080p resolution.

  * - This mod can be used with Tale of Two Wastelands, so we left NCR imagery in the cut.
