📋 About This Mod

.ini settings to increase performance in Point Lookout DLC

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION

Since its release, players have reported devastating FPS drops in Point Lookout bog areas. Even on High-end (mondern/2025) systems, these problems persist. The game engine does its own Antialiasing and Anisotropic Filtering - and the bog is FULL with tall grass and trees. The game defaults to 8xAA, and can only use a maximum of two CPU threads/Cores. This is fine for the entire DC area.

But soon after arriving in PL, most will experience crippling FPS drops. This causes stuttering, lags and a gross overall decrease in all-game speed - it's like playing the game in slow motion. You can check by looking straight down on the ground - if your issue arrises from AF, looking down will make you run at normal speed again.

I found 3 ways to lessen the symptoms:

-- AMELIORATING STUTTER & MICROLAGS --

It is recommended to set your .ini properties to read-only as soon as you start manually altering them. Also, you may wanna put all manual changes into a FalloutCustom.ini, to keep track of them in one place. The custom.ini is loaded by Fallout 3, after the Fallout.ini and FalloutPrefs.ini. But you may have to create it manually.

  • []Teach the game Triple Buffering to avoid the frame-rate halving which occurs when frame generation time slightly exceeds monitor refresh time. This starts to happen when FPS drop below the monitor refresh rate (e.g. already at 40 FPS on a 60 HZ monitor, in which case you won't see 40 but only still 30 FPS, and so on...)

[]For this to work, you also need to activate Vsync (vertical sync). It is enforced by the game anyway, but you wanna make sure it's on by setting it:

  • []in the Fallout.ini:  iPresentInterval=1

    -- HELPING THE ANTI-ALIASING/AF ISSUE --

Do this change in Fallout.ini - not FalloutCustom.ini. I believe, the setting doesn't take when outsourced there. Not all manual .ini entries seem to be acknowledged by the game (unlike in later Skyrim).

    • []in Fallout.ini change  iMaxAnisotropy=4

-- THE SLOW MOTION ISSUE --

There is an infamous setting to "clamp the framerate" - this setting is misunderstood. It does not actually cap the framerate, this should be done via your graphics card driver software (Like NVidiaGeforce Experience). The setting below is a physics setting, and will cause the slow-motion, instead of stuttering. This happens as soo
