📋 About This Mod
Overhauls most dialogue in the game and fixes a 17-year-old bug that prevented an entire phoneme (speech sound) from working at all. FNV/FO3/TTW
Have you ever noticed that NPC lip movements, apart from being fairly janky as a rule, have a tendency to occasionally blip, miss a syllable here and there, invent a few syllables out of thin air, or even outright give up on certain words, leaving the speaker's mouth shut? If the answer is yes, then, for better or worse, your Perception is not a dump stat. For the rest, at least you can spend those points on something else.
THE PROBLEM
There are two halves to the problem of lip motions failing to be a good match for the spoken dialogue.
Problem One: The Dialogue Generator's Limitations
The dialogue generator system the GECK relies upon possesses a disappointingly threadbare English ruleset, and this system breaks down when the words it's presented with fall outside that ruleset. Or, perhaps more accurately, the ruleset seems to have been built with the specific intent of leaning on fudged rules—a presumption that when words are slightly misarticulated, it's still "good enough" and will fly under the radar. Due to this looseness, there are endless ways of causing the lips to lose agreement with the voice.
For this mod, I have comprehensively reworked the game's entire lexicon, serving to provide the dialogue generator with lines of text which better fit its limited scope. I have also, where appropriate, scrutinized individual voiced lines to establish how far off-script they went or to hunt for other anomalies, in order to feed the dialogue generator sentences that represent what the actors actually said, rather than what the script intended they should say.
This effort fixed things like:
[]The lip generator misinterpreting vowels in many words, such as how it treats the word "town," rhyming with "clown," as though it rhymes with "clone." Or "does" as "doze."
[]The lip generator failing outright with words that have uncommon structure, such as "massacre."
[]The lip generator handling unique punctuation, such as dashes, improperly, causing peculiar mouth motions.
[]Similar words that nonetheless have different pronunciations altogether. (Southeast/southern, suit/suite/suited.)
[*]Inconsistent digraphs
