📋 About This Mod
I found the hair lacking in this game, it was flat, boring, and a bit too bright. So I decided to do something about it, and I might as well share!
So here is my mod to improve the contrast and variation of the vanilla hair textures.
Now with optional brighter version!

!!! Curly/afro hair and bushy beards will not be able to reach the same level of contrast with the vanilla meshes !!!
(That's because Bethesda used a few tiny textures repetitively to texture those, but the other hairstyles use less 'generic' textures)
Some (possibly interesting) technical details:
Fallout 4 uses 6 textures for all hairstyles: 5 grayscale 'definition' maps,
and 1 colour-grading lookup texture. The game combines these to get the
final haircolours for all vanilla hairstyles.
Wasteland Salon is a cosmetic mod for Fallout 4 that enhances the default hairstyles with improved contrast and variation. With over 26,000 endorsements and 1.4 million downloads, it's a popular choice for players seeking subtle visual upgrades without changing gameplay.
✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Huge community trust: 26k endorsements and 1.4M downloads prove it's a go-to for hair improvements.
- Subtle but noticeable: adds contrast and variation to vanilla styles without overhauling them.
- Lightweight and safe: cosmetic mods like this rarely cause conflicts, and it's been stable since 2016.
⚠️ Cons
- No screenshots or detailed previews in the description, so you're flying blind until you try it.
- Last updated in 2016 — might not be tested with the latest Fallout 4 patches or DLC.
- Only affects default hairstyles; if you use hair mods, this won't touch those.
For Fallout 4 players who want a quick, low-risk visual upgrade to the vanilla hairstyles without installing a full hair pack. Skip if you're looking for new styles or major overhauls — this is purely a texture tweak.
💡 Beginner Tips
- Use a mod manager like Vortex or NMM to install and uninstall easily, especially if you want to revert.
- Load order rarely matters for texture mods, but place it after any mods that alter hair meshes to ensure it takes effect.
- If you don't see a difference, check that the mod is active and not overwritten by other texture mods.
