Introduction

In vanilla Fallout 4, the Pip-Boy light has little impact on stealth. The glow is rendered visually, but it does not properly increase the player’s own visibility in the detection formula.

This creates an immersion break. You can stand in a dark room with your light on, clearly illuminated, and enemies still react as if you were hidden in shadow.

This mod fixes the problem at the engine level. Any active personal light source now affects how visible you are to AI. This includes the Pip-Boy light, weapon-mounted flashlights, and helmet lamps or tactical lighting equipment.

When one of these lights is active, your effective light level is properly reflected in the AI’s detection calculation. Bright light makes you easier to detect. Darkness keeps you concealed. The system finally behaves in a consistent and believable way.

The goal is not to make stealth artificially harder, but to restore logical light behavior and reliable AI perception across all player light sources.

Difference to other implementations

Some mods attempt to address this behavior through Papyrus scripts by adjusting detection values externally or reacting after certain events.

This approach works on a surface level, but it does not change how the game internally evaluates light during the actual detection formula.

This mod operates directly at the engine level and integrates light sources into the original calculation used by AI. The player’s light exposure becomes a native part of the detection decision, alongside distance, movement, line of sight, and other stealth factors.

Instead of simulating visibility changes from the outside, the system now feeds accurate light information into the core logic that determines whether you are seen. This results in more consistent behavior, better compatibility, and a solution that scales naturally with all mechanics that rely on the detection formula.
