📋 About This Mod
UPDATE]: Added an optional file that does NOT include the stagger changes. USE IT OR THE MAIN FILE, NOT BOTH!!!
Description
:
Pain Train is so much fun:
I had so much fun barreling into enemies with the Pain Train perk (which lets you known them over if you sprint into them while wearing Power Armor), but I got sick of having to wear a suit of armor that looks like a cross between the Hulk meets the world's fattest sumo wrestler, so I collected a suite of mods that could emulate all the effects of the power armor without needing to use the damn things (I will list those below).
The only this I couldn't do was smash into people, which this mod fixes. Now you no longer need to be wearing Power Armor to sprint into enemies to knock them out.
I also made some other changes to the perks - they now follow the level requirement progression that the mod Linear Perk Levels uses (i.e. rank one requires level 1, rank 2 requires level 3, etc.).
Additionally, I have removed the cooldown to the stagger effect (previously an enemy couldn't be staggered again for another 12 seconds - now it's 2, and that's only so that you don't end up smashing them repeatedly as you continue sprinting).
Furthermore, no enemy is immune to this effect. Even a Deathclaw will get knocked back by it (which if I may say so myself, is hilarious).
Is this a bit unbalanced? Yeah, probably, but it's far too hilarious for me to care...
This was made with FO4Edit.
The mods I used to emulate the Power Armor effects are:
- Jetpack - Ring
- OPVaultSuit
- No Fall Damage
- Stealth and Recon Gear

How To Install:
Put the "PainTrain_NoPA.esp" into your "Fallout 4/Data" directory.
You will need to either use NMM (not recommended) or Mod Organizer 2 (not recommended at the moment, but will be HIGHLY recommended as soon as it's out of beta) to load the plugin. The alternative (and recommended) method is to add it to the "plugins.txt" file yourself, and here's how you do that:
- Open up plugins.txt (for Windows, this is found at "C:\Users\<YOUR_NAME>\AppData\Local\Fallout4"), and change manually type enter "PainTrain_NoPA.esp" on a new line in the file (without the quotes, of course).
Now the "AppData" folder is hidden by default on Windows, so you will either need to unhide all files (which you can do from "Folder Options", or open the Start Menu search bar and type in %appdata% and hit enter (this will dump you into the "AppData/Roaming" folder, so just backtrack one and select the "Local" folder).
I HIGHLY recommend you set plugins.txt to "read only", or else the wil
Pain Train - No Power Armor is a small tweak for Fallout 4 that removes the Power Armor requirement from the Pain Train perk, allowing you to charge into enemies without wearing Power Armor. It's a simple, impactful change for players who want the perk's benefits without the armor.
✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Makes the Pain Train perk viable for non-Power Armor builds, which is a huge quality-of-life win.
- Community-approved with 311 endorsements and over 6,000 downloads, so it's proven popular.
- Tiny mod that does exactly what it says—no bloat, just the fix you want.
⚠️ Cons
- Last updated in 2015, so it may not be compatible with newer game patches or DLC.
- Only affects the Pain Train perk—if you wanted more perk overhauls, this won't cover them.
- Potential conflicts with other mods that modify the same perk or perk tree.
For Fallout 4 players who want to use the Pain Train perk without being forced into Power Armor. If you're running a melee or unarmed build and hate the Power Armor requirement, this is a must-have. Skip if you're fine with the vanilla restriction or want more extensive perk changes.
💡 Beginner Tips
- Since this mod edits a perk, place it early in your load order to avoid conflicts with other perk mods.
- If you're using a mod manager like Vortex or MO2, let it handle the file placement to keep things clean.
- Test the charge attack on a low-level enemy first to confirm the perk works without Power Armor.
