📋 About This Mod
Learn what causes the flickering issues in Fallout 3 and how to fix it.
The flickering mesh (or texture) problem is related with semi-transparent armors or clothes. (not sure but probably fully transparent armors or clothes too) Or any meshes that inclues transparency. For this reason, I will tag this mod as sexy/skimpy. No need to download anything. The file in the download section is just a placeholder. Without it, I can't make a page.
Summary
1. Whether the flickering mesh (armor, clothes, and etc.) problem is cased by Gamebryo engine limitation or DX9 bug or both, one thing is now crystal clear that it is a graphical glitch caused by number of nearby light sources illuminating the mesh at least for Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas.
2. Since the interior cells are full of various light sources, it is most likely that you will encounter flickering issues at least in several spots in the cells.
3. On the other hand, you won't encounter the flickering issues in exterior cells except for a few cases because it is expected that there aren't many light sources in exterior cells.
4. However, if you are using mods adding a bunch of light sources in exterior cells, you will probably encounter lots of flickering issues even in exterior cells.
5. As long as your chracter or your comanion or any npc wears armors or clothes with transparency, you are destined to encounter flickering issues in many spots.
6. If you prefer to hold on to semi-transparent armors or clothes, your best bet is to remove all "effective" troublemakers (see image #40) by yourself and not to use Pipboy light as much as you can (see gif #41), if you want to enjoy an immersive gameplay. (solution 1) → This method can cause a CTD.
7. Or simply deactivate alpha transparency from the mesh. Not a perfect solution but very convenient. (see image #43) (solution 2)
9. However, according to a Nexusmod user named Kasumi446, deleting a vanilla reference ID can cause more problems such as CTD. So, disabling the troublemakers is much better idea than just deleting them. (see image #45) (solution 3) → This is the best solution for now unless someone finds better methods.
8. If you are trying add additional light sources in exterior cells, you should try to keep the distance between the light sources as appropriate (not too close) as possible. This is because some armors and clothes aren't the only meshes with transparency. There are lots of meshes with transparency in Fallout 3 such as a paper mesh.
9. In Fallout New Vegas, you will encounter much less number of flickering issues. This is because Obsidian smartly avoided this problem by removing alpha transparency in most meshes, which had been quite an issue for Fallou
