ZigZag Katana

The Ninjato, also known as the Ninjaken or Shinobigatana, is a weapon that is commonly depicted in film, television, and books about feudal Japan. The sword is associated with modern ninjutsu practitioners such as Masaaki Hatsumi and Stephen K. Hayes. Replicas of the Ninjato can be seen on display at the Koka Ninja Village Museum in Kōka, Shiga and the Iga-ryū Ninja Museum in Iga.

However, there is no historical evidence of a specific 'ninja sword' used by ninja warriors. It is believed that the Ninjato was based on the design of a Wakizashi or Chokutō type sword. According to historian Dr. Stephen Turnbull, who specializes in Japanese military history, the most important weapon of the ninja was the sword. The standard Japanese sword, the Katana, was often used by ninja for convenience as they would choose a blade that was shorter and straighter than usual.
