The Battle of Tarawa The Battle of Tarawa marked a turning point in American amphibious warfare and exposed both the strengths and deadly flaws in U. S. doctrine during the Pacific War. On 20 November 1943, the U. S. 2nd Marine Division assaulted the heavily fortified island of Betio using new amphibious tracked vehicles known as LVTs (“Landing Vehicles, Tracked”), which became critical after an unexpectedly low tide left Higgins boats stranded on coral reefs hundreds of metres from shore. Marines forced to abandon their craft had to wade through open water under intense Japanese machine-gun, mortar, and artillery fire, suffering catastrophic casualties before even reaching the beach. The island itself had been transformed by the Japanese into a dense fortress of concrete bunkers, log pillboxes, anti-boat obstacles, trenches, and interconnected strongpoints designed to kill attackers at the waterline. Fighting quickly devolved into brutal close-quarters combat, with Marines using flamethrowers, satchel charges, tanks, and coordinated naval gunfire to destroy defensive positions one by one. Tarawa revealed major weaknesses in American pre-invasion planning, naval bombardment accuracy, tide intelligence, communications, and beach coordination, but it also demonstrated the effectiveness of specialised amphibious vehicles, close air support, and integrated Marine-Navy assault tactics. The shocking casualty rate — over 1,000 Americans killed in only 76 hours — forced the United States military to overhaul its amphibious assault doctrine for future operations such as Battle of Saipan, Battle of Peleliu, and Battle of Iwo Jima.
