Sky Prison

The prison hangs in the open air above the mouth of a volcano. Below, the crater churns with molten lava—thick and slow—casting a constant orange pulse upward to sky cells. Sparks drift upward like fireflies from hell. Each cell is a narrow platform enclosed on three sides. The guards drop the prisoner into their cell, and if the prisoner is not careful, they won’t stay in the cell. There is nothing for the prisoner to hold on to while in their cell. Guards do not prevent escape, because any misstep means falling into fire. Even if one were to leap outward instead of down, there is nothing but lava and rocks in every direction.
