Desk, Portable (Closed)

This is more properly called a “Captain’s writing-box” or just a “writing-box”. My parents have one. It is a box that, when opened, reveals a slanted writing surface. The writing surface consists of two panels that can be lifted up to store paper or documents behind them. It also has spots for ink jars and a place to store pens. It was also not unheard of for these boxes to have secret compartments (the one my parents have has a false panel that conceals two tiny little drawers). Here is a link to another one that has multiple secrete components: https://hygra.com/wb/captain.htm In this version, the box is fully closed. This particular writing-box belonged to Jane Austin.
