They always do for an execution. The Elder sits pride of place, and people check the fruit and vegetables they've brought along for the occasion - with the occasional rock, depending on the crime. Whether by the noose or at the stake, everyone wants a good view. Just off the crossroads, the gravedigger waits patiently. He prefers hangings; his work has already begun in this stony, unhallowed ground - and he gets first dibs on the clothing (after the executioner, of course). The people are getting restless. At a signal, the condemned is brought forward. Rowdy children start to throw their fruit and jeer as the moonlight sweeps across the pale, terrified face of one who didn't even face a trial. That's just not how things are done around here. Trials make it all take too long, and, after all - nothing brings the village together like a good execution. It is time.
