📋 About This Mod
It's no secret that DAO struggles to run (if it runs at all) on modern systems. There are multiple workarounds to alleviate this issue, but the core of the problem remains - a memory leak that's present in almost all Bioware Aurora engine-derived games.
Thankfully, recent updates to DXVK allow for changes to memory management, which significantly decrease memory usage and (from my testing) finally fix (or at least minimize) the memory leak.
WARNING: READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY OR THIS WILL NOT WORK
Requirements:
In order for DXVK to work, you need a GPU with driver compatibility with the latest Vulkan version (Nvidia GTX 900 series or later, AMD RX 400 or later).
Installation:
Disclaimer - this is not a replacement for the 4 GB patch. If you have not done so already, patch the game using one of these guides:
(GoG/Origin)
(Steam) (NOTE: Make sure to follow instructions carefully, you need to replace the .exe AND then patch it for 4GB)
1. Check that your PC meets the requirements listed above. Also make sure you have the latest drivers from your GPU vendor installed. Your game will crash if your hardware/drivers don't support the latest Vulkan version.
2. Extract the "d3d9.dll" and "dxvk.conf" files provided in the download into your "Dragon Age Origins\bin_ship" folder (where DAOrigins.exe is located)
3. Run the game!
Extra/Optional Instructions:
Using Reshade with Vulkan:
Install Reshade through its .exe installer. When pointing to the DAOrigins.exe, make sure to choose Vulkan as the API instead of DirectX9
