How to create an audio replacement mod for DmC: Devil May Cry?

DmC: Devil May Cry’s audio files are packed in .apk format.

The audio packaging structure can be described as “a container within a container.”

The files must be unpacked before individual audio files can be accessed and modified.

.apk files (AudioPackage: audio resource package)

Therefore, the process of creating an audio replacement mod is:

Unpack the audio → Modify the target audio files → Repack the audio

The tools required for this project are located in the datas folder.

Project Directory Structure:

Due to distribution restrictions, I cannot include the tools themselves in this project. Only the scripts required to perform the operations are included.

If you want to obtain the required tools more easily, please visit this project’s GitHub Releases page.

Please place the downloaded tools in this mod folder according to this structure.

How to locate the original files?

Quick method: Search for apk in the game’s root directory.

Dante’s main campaign audio packages are located in ...\DevilGame\CookedPCConsole and use the Main_PC prefix.

Vergil DLC audio packages are located in ...\DevilGame\Published\Content\DLCVergilsDownfall and use the DLC1_PC prefix.

Files without a language suffix, such as Main_PC.apk and DLC1_PC.apk, contain general sound effects.

The suffixes of the remaining files indicate the language of the dialogue.

For example, the English audio package is Main_PC_INT.apk and DLC1_PC_INT.apk, while the German audio package is `Main_PC_DEU.apk and DLC1_PC_DEU.apk`.

Note that Dante’s battle cries from all voice-over versions are included in Main_PC.apk.

PLease always back up the original audio package files before making any changes to avoid unnecessary problems.

How to unpack the audio packages?

  This step requires the .bms script included with this project. The script was created by AlphaTwentyThree.

  Note: No records were kept while working through this step, so a reference source cannot currently be provided. Apologies for the inconvenience.

  Open a Command Prompt in the root directory DmC_Audio_Modding_Guide, and use the script to extract the .bnk and then .wem files.

  Replace !!!!file_name.apk here!!!! in the command with the name of the audio package file, then run the following commands in order.

  Make sure to preserve the spaces between the commands. Do not remove them.
