Getting started
This tool has a very similar workflow to UPK Explorer for UE2/UE3
First you need to set up a working folder. There will be separate folders for each game, and they will contain:
-
[]Export: This is where your exported textures (dds) and binary files will be exported
[]Import: Place your saved dds files (with generated mips) in the same subfolder structure as you found it in the export folder.
Your edited text resources will also be saved there. This folder is your current mod's source files, so make sure to make copies of it.[]Mods: when you generate a mod, it will be located under Mods\
This is the mod you can install with Void Installer.

Part1: Creating a simple texture mod
I will write more as I add more functions to the tool.
Game file structure
With the exception of (wwise) audio, Void engine stores its game assets in "resources" files, called game1, 2, 3 and 4 which is empty.
Game1 appears to store common assets that are always loaded, while game2 and 3 seem to be level specific.
It's important to understand which resources file you are editing, as resources from game1 cannot reference resources from game2 and 3.
This is also why some resources will appear duplicates, as they are copies, but in different resources files.
In Void explorer these are called resource catalogs and they are color coded to help you identify which set of file you are working with.
Each catalog contain several thousand resource entries. They are identified with a key within the file, but when resources reference each other (like a material listing textures), they are referenced by name. This is why there are two fields on the resource detail view, the top one being the key with the catalog name and classname, and the bottom one being the name. This is also why the main resource list has two view: key and name
These resource catalogs (game1,2,3 and 4) have patches. These are additional files that contains resource entries that override the earlier entries.
Void installer will create a new, dedicated patch called game1_voidmod, game2_voidmod etc...
All the mods will go into that patch. If two mods override the same resource, the last mod to be installed will have its value kept in the patch.
This is what makes it possible to install several mods, and it's also why the only file that is modified by the tool is the master.index which contains the list of resources files and patches. It's also possible to uninstall mods in any order as uninstall patches are generated, and applied to the "voidmod" patch.
Everything is backed up, nothing to worry about, so you don't have to worry about messing up your game files when trying to create mods with this tool.
Troubleshooting issues
If your edits are invalid and the game doesn't like what you're doing, the following can happen:
-
[]The game crashes on startup: I had that with invalid references, or broken syntax
[
]The game freezes when loading the level: I had that when trying to swap meshes of different, incompatible types[]The game crashes after loading the level: I had when my edits led to a reference that was not loaded in this level.
[]Nothing changes in game: This happens when the thing you try to edit is either ignored by the game, or it's not for what you think it is.
