  Prototype locomotive overview:

  • []NYC J1E 5344, the first locomotive in the United States to receive streamlined styling, and a high-speed passenger locomotive that underwent two streamlined rebuilds.[/]

    []In December 1934, No. 5344 received its first streamlined modification. The Commodore Vanderbilt appearance was designed by Carl F. Kantola, an engineer in the Equipment Engineering Department of the New York Central Railroad.[/]

    []In July 1939, No. 5344 was modified a second time to make its appearance consistent with the J3A locomotives assigned to haul the 20th Century Limited. This streamlined look was designed by the renowned industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss. [/]
