📋 About This Mod
DESCRIPTION
Atlas of the Iliac Bay is a project aiming to rename all of Daggerfall's locations to more varied, meaningful and lore-friendly names. Using handcrafted names and a vastly expanded name generator than what was used during the game development, we're ensuring there are no duplicates or no location that sound the same. High Rock in vanilla has 44 prefixes, 45 suffixes 16 extra parts (Hamlet, Commons, Spring, etc.) to name its towns. We expanded that to 481 prefixes, 303 suffixes and and 63 extra parts for a total of 145 743 possible combinations excluding the extra parts. Renaming locations with something interesting greatly helps to make the world feel more alive and less generic.
This project is released in parts, with each update covering a few more regions until High Rock is fully covered in 1. 0. 0. As of 0. 3. 0, the regions of Wrothgaria, Gavaudon, Orsinium, Alcaire, Menevia, Koegria, Kambria and Bhoriane are done, for a total of 2962 renamed locations.
You can find the file "AtlasOfTheIliacBay_RenamedLocationsIndex" in your StreamingAssets/Docs folder. The "Progress" sheet lists the old and new names for the covered regions. If you're curious to see what are all the new prefixes, suffixes and all the raw data used to name locations, you can find those in the appropriate sheet too.
Here's an exhaustive list of how new names are choosen (skip below if you're not interested in all those fascinating details) :

✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Solid community traction with 60 endorsements and over 8k downloads.
- Lore-aware approach that respects geography and in-game features.
- Active development, last updated April 2026.
⚠️ Cons
- Only covers four regions so far, leaving the rest of the Iliac Bay untouched.
- Renaming may conflict with other mods that alter location names or quests referencing them.
- Limited to Daggerfall Unity, so classic DOSBox players miss out.
For Daggerfall veterans who want a fresh, lore-friendly take on location names without overhauling gameplay. If you're a completionist exploring every region, this adds depth. Skip if you prefer vanilla names or play on the original DOS version.
💡 Beginner Tips

- Check the mod's forum thread for updates on additional regions being added.
- Since it renames locations, be aware that quests may reference old names—keep a backup of your save if you're mid-quest.
