Soviet Ground Forces in Germany So the tanks and armored vehicles are not in the sanbox, but the air defense of those units are! All the Shock Armies had their own Radio Technical Troops and SAM units like the SA-4/6/8/9/11. Of course there is more; like the SA-13, the famous ZSU-23-4, 2S6 Tunguska, thousands of MANPADS and AAA but I had to draw a line… SA-4/6/8/9/11 is the line. The 481st and 814th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiments (SA-8) are intended to reinforce divisions designated as Operational Maneuver Groups to be divided (12th PD and 32nd PD of the 20th GdA). Above it all where three SA-4 Brigades for area defense, which could move with the mobile Armies. One (the 133rd) SA-4 Brigade was in 1989 in transition to the S-300V/SA-12…! And has one of the battalions equipped with the new SA-12. All the units are placed in assembly area's. So away from the peacetime locations but not yet in an offensive/defensive posture.
