The production, and therefore the price, of food has been badly affected by a combination of factors, ranging from the COVID-19 pandemic to poor harvests to the current invasion of Ukraine; prior to the war, over 5 percentage of global calories came from this nation. While protests erupt the West at high food and energy prices, many in the developing world begin to starve. While the United Nations is paralysed due to the RF being a member of the UN Security Council, a growing number of nations, including NATO members, demanded action to prevent global suffering from increasing. The president of Türkiye had tried to peacefully arrange the transport of grain from the Port of Odessa through the Black Sea, but these discussions achieved little. The president of Russia, angered by what was, in his eyes, the Turkish breaking the Montreux Convention, refused to let any grain leave Ukraine unless RF naval vessels were allowed to use the Bosphorus Straits unhindered. On the other hand, NATO countries were now joined by numerous others pushing for Türkiye to allow a naval task force into the Black Sea; however, this would further break the Montreux Convention should it happen.
