Operation Ottoman Curtain

In 2024 Turkish president Erdogan declared that Turkey wuld be withdrawng from NATO and stated that all NATO troops must leave the country by 1 JAN 2025. Immediately following this declaration, a resurgence of Neo-Ottoman policies were insituted, and Turkey's ambitions turned outward. Turkey sought to increase military spending and turned to Russia to supply their rapidly expanding military. They purchased more SA-21 systems as well as Su-35 and Su-25 aircraft. Turkey slowly started building up forces on Cyprus, claiming to be protecting the ethnic Turks on the northern portion of the island. On September 1st, Turkey issued an ultimatum to the Cypriot government ordering their troops to stand down by September 10 and allow Turkish peacekeeping forces to occupy the island. The Greek majority on the southern half of the island strongly resisted, and stated they would not comply. NATO forces in the area claimed they would respect their agreements with Cyprus to defend them agianst aggression, a statement which Turkey dismissed. NATO announced a launch of Operation Ottoman Curtain, a deployment of forces to the Eastern Mediterranean area starting on September 9. Storms over Europe have significantly delayed NATO forces from deploying to the area though, which could have critical consequences for NATO forces already in the area.
