📋 About This Mod
Scenario built in v1.14 B998.5 Ballistic missile submarines represented a major piller of deterrence during the Cold War. Although in theory they were undetectable and so represented a survivable second-strike or retaliatory nuclear force, in practice the US and USSR expended a vast effort to locate and track the other sides' SSBN/PLARB assets at sea. You are Captain of K-426, a Project 667A PLARB of the Red Banner Northern Fleet: your mission is to patrol on station and be ready to fire your sixteen R-27 liquid-fueled ballistic missiles on order from Moscow. However, your boat is noisy, your sonar is poor and you need to operate in America's front yard because of the short-range of your not-at-all intercontinental-capable missiles. A major international crisis has developed that is keeping NATO and Warsaw Pact diplomats busy trying to prevent war but if shooting begins it may escalate to nuclear release. Your mission is to survive undetected long enough and be ready to strike America's heartland while operating against ASW forces that are alert and actively hunting your boat. You have trained your crew to the highest possible standards and you hope that this will be enough to offset NATO anti-submarine forces' skills and equipment. Scenario Author's Notes For the past 50+ years, ballistic missile submarines have conducted deterrence patrols to give politicians pause in the event of an escalating superpower crisis. In this situation deterrence will fail and nuclear release will come at some point. Your job is to remain undetected and survive until the launch orders arrive. Tricky, because your boat is obsolete, noisy and fitted with a poor sonar suite while the opposition is at the peak of its ASW game. Time and again the the seventies and eighties Red Fleet PLARB crews took their Navaga's (NATO code name Yankee I) to patrol off North America in the teeth of some of the most effective anti-submarine forces in the Atlantic.
