Comte de Grasse's Squadron, 1988

This scenario assumes World War III starts in 1988. It is assumed that a rebellion in East Germany led to sporadic fighting between Soviet, Warsaw Pact, rebel, and NATO forces. By early June, this had escalated into open conflict. Members of NATO formally agreed to take action against the Soviet Union on June 10, 1988. Troops were already on the ground, but now fighting intensified. On June 12th, the Soviets used chemical weapons against NATO troops, and NATO responded the next day with tactical nuclear weapon strikes against Warsaw Pact forces. During the next several days, there were a number of additional nuclear exchanges in Europe and at sea. At present, the war has been "limited" in the sense that no attacks have been made against the homeland territories of the four nuclear powers involved in the conflict, and as a result no counterforce strikes with strategic nuclear weapons have taken place. During these first few critical days of the war, one of the goals of the American navy is to secure the vital sea lanes of the Atlantic so that convoys will be able to resupply NATO forces in the coming weeks. As part of this effort, a task force centered around the American destroyer Comte de Grasse has been assigned to patrol the waters near the Azores. Please note that while your WRA is "weapons free," which means you will not automatically be hauled in front of a Board of Inquiry if you accidentally sink a fishing boat, this does not mean you should try to sink them, or shoot airliners out of the sky, or kill harmless sea creatures with depth charges, etc. Quite apart from it being morally reprehensible behavior--we are supposed to be the good guys, you know--it means you are wasting ammunition.
