It is designed to replace the older OTR-21 Tochka system and forms a key part of Russia's conventional and nuclear-capable tactical deterrent. The system is built around a solid-propellant, single-stage missile with a launch weight of 3,800 kg. Its operational range is generally cited as 400–500 km, and it carries a warhead weighing between 480 and 700 kg, which can be configured for various conventional roles—such as high-explosive fragmentation, cluster munitions, fuel-air explosive, or bunker penetration—or for a nuclear yield estimated between 5 and 50 kilotons. One of the defining characteristics of the Iskander-M is its guidance and flight profile. It uses an inertial navigation system supplemented by GLONASS satellite navigation, with an optical DSMAC (Digital Scene-Matching Area Correlator) terminal homing phase for high accuracy, reportedly achieving a circular error probable of 5–7 meters. The missile follows a quasi-ballistic trajectory, maneuvering during both boost and terminal phases to complicate interception by anti-ballistic missile systems. It can also release decoys to further penetrate enemy air defenses. The system is road-mobile on an 8x8 MZKT-79306 transporter-erector-launcher (TEL) carrying two missiles, with a crew of three, and can be readied for launch in as little as four minutes.
