📋 About This Mod
Restores classic Arkham Asylum/City controller behavior in Arkham Knight by moving floor grate, maintenance tunnel and ledge-drop interactions from RT + B back to RT + A.
Cassic Controller Layout
Classic Controller Layout restores part of the classic controller scheme from Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City in Batman: Arkham Knight. In Arkham Knight, several context-sensitive movement and environmental actions were changed from the familiar RT + A combination to RT + B.
This mod changes them back to RT + A, including:
-
[]Entering floor grates[/]
[]Entering maintenance tunnels[/]
[]Dropping down / climbing down from ledges[/]
Recommended Companion Mod
I highly recommend using this together with Old Controls by theweskinator.
Old Controls restores two other major classic controller bindings:
-
[]Batmobile Summon / Enter → D-Pad Up[/]
[]Detective Mode → LB[/]
Installation (Steam)
-
[]Download and extract the mod archive.[/]
[]Open your Batman: Arkham Knight installation folder.[/]
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Batman Arkham Knight\BmGame\CookedPCConsole\
-
[]Back up your original BmGame.upk before replacing anything.[/]
[]Copy the modded BmGame.upk into the CookedPCConsole folder.[/]
[]Replace the existing file when prompted.[/]
The affected on-screen button prompts still display RT + B.
The actual controls have been changed and work with RT + A, but I was unable to make the corresponding HUD prompts follow the new input. The incorrect prompt is therefore only visual and can be ignored.
Technical Information for Mod Creators
The final gameplay change is contained in:
RPlayerController\StealthMoveMode\StartRun
The function was exported from BmGame.upk using UPK Explorer, edited as raw data in HxD, and then imported back into the same function.
The useful discovery came from comparing:
RPlayerController\StealthMoveMode\StartRun
RPlayerController\StealthMoveMode\TriggerBlockBreaker
In the relevant section, both functions contain the same preceding byte sequence but use different four-byte targets after 37.
StartRun originally contains:
37 86 22 01 00 16 04 0B
while TriggerBlockBreaker contains:
37 F6 35 01 00 16 04 0B
In the exported StartRun file, the following four bytes at the beginning of offset 0x200 were changed:
86 22 01 00
F6 35 01 00
The edited section therefore becomes:
37 F6 35 01 00 16 04 0B
After reimporting the modified StartRun function into BmGame.upk, the A-button path in StealthMoveMode uses the same relevant state target as the original B-button path.
This single change was sufficient in testing to move floor-grate entry, maintenance-tunnel entry and ledge-descending interactions from RT + B to RT + A. No additional gameplay patches were required. The HUD prompt is separate from the underlying interaction logic. Several attempts were made to alter the corresponding prompt behavior, but they either produced no visible change or caused script serialization/startup errors. For that reason, the released mod leaves the HUD system untouched.
