This mod simply removes the visual data from most of the shields in the game. Your character will still benefit from all of the mechanics and bonuses off having a shield equipped, you just don't have to look at it on their character image.
The mod's effect is not toggleable and is all-or-nothing. No shields are visible except those I missed or thought only NPCs would typically use (like goblin and fist shields). Also, the characters still take positions and use animations as though they had a shield intact. It can be added or removed at any point and should have no effect on saves to do so.
