Initiative Variants is a gameplay mod for Baldur's Gate 3 that replaces the vanilla d4 initiative roll with larger dice options (d6 through d20), and includes an MCM add-on for dynamic in-game adjustment. It's for players who want more variance in combat turn order.
✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Community favorite with 528 endorsements and 161k downloads — clearly fills a niche
- Simple concept, big impact: more dice variety means more unpredictable combat starts
- MCM integration gives you real-time control without restarting
⚠️ Cons
- Last updated October 2024 — may not be compatible with future game patches
- MCM add-on requires the MCM framework, which isn't mentioned in the description — potential hidden dependency
For Baldur's Gate 3 players who want to shake up combat pacing and enjoy more randomness in turn order. Skip if you prefer the game's default balance or want a mod that adds new mechanics beyond dice changes.
💡 Beginner Tips
- If you're using the MCM add-on, make sure you have the Mod Configuration Menu framework installed first — it's not listed in the description but is required for that feature.
- Test the mod in a save before a big fight to see how the new dice range feels — d20 makes combat much more chaotic.
- Check the mod's page for any patch notes or compatibility updates, since it hasn't been updated since October 2024.
