📋 About This Mod
Description
This mod is an extension of an idea I was playing around with before the introduction of Hexblade for BG3, but I feel it plays different enough to be worth publishing so I revisited the idea for this Modathon.
The core goals and features are:
-
[]Optional complexity: The class adds multiple interacting systems, but each stays fairly simple unless you choose to spec into them and make them more complex for greater rewards. [/]
[]Emphasise your weapon and build: Make your weapon/build choice matter and feel good to use rather than a getting a free proficiency in all weapons.[/]
[]Strong weapon combat over Eldritch Blast: Give strong and fun melee abilities, both free and using resource, to make weapon combat more enticing than using Eldritch Blast (both in terms of numbers and combat feel).[/]
[]Combat cooperation: Pick a battle ally and work closely with them, helping them survive and buffing both of you. Working together should feel good and rewarding, not just be a requirement.[/]
[]Mobility: Dive around the battlefield or use your weapon to teleport into enemies.[/]
[]Dragon Patronage: Pick 1 dragon as your patron (out of 5 chromatics/5 metallics). Your choice will matter for your class and feel relevant.[/]
[]Risk-reward: Your strongest buffs also expose you to damage, creating very fun engagements. The extra motivation to stay in combat plays into this as well, giving you many fun choices.[/]
[]High customisation: Two differently levelled Firstborn Wyrm Warlocks should feel very different to play.[/]
[]Balance and Buildcrafting: The mod has been in development for a very long time now so that, through a lot of number crunching and playtesting, the subclass would be balanced while still not being overwhelming with maths, conditions and exceptions to achieve that balance. The mod allows strong builds if you're into min-maxing as that's part of the fun for many people, but the average build should feel fairly well balanced for the game.[/]
This class is based on the FFXIV Dragoon, but you don't need to know FFXIV to enjoy it. It takes some lore and game theory aspects that make Dragoon fun within FFXIV and what separates it from other FFXIV classes specifically, rather than what makes FFXIV fun in general, then reimagines that core philosophy in a DnD5e setting in a way that feels satisfying to play. There are multiple nods to FFXIV, but they're all strongly integrated - the theming is just something FFXIV players will understand as references/inspiration.
Installation instructions & Requirements
Requires the BG3 Script Extender and the Compatibility Framework mod. The mod should be compatible wit
Firstborn Wyrm Patron for Warlock adds a FFXIV Dragoon-inspired subclass to Baldur's Gate 3, emphasizing weapon combat, battlefield mobility, and cooperative buffs over Eldritch Blast. It includes 10 dragon patron choices and optional complexity systems. For warlock players wanting a melee-focused, dragon-themed build with high customization. 6 endorsements, 117 downloads.
✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- A small but enthusiastic following (6 endorsements) signals a promising niche build.
- Genuine melee alternative to Eldritch Blast spam, with free and resource-based weapon abilities.
- Ten dragon patron options give real replayability and roleplay hooks.
⚠️ Cons
- Thin community testing (6 endorsements, 117 downloads) means balance quirks may still be present.
- Melee-first design will disappoint players who prefer traditional ranged warlock play.
- No installation or compatibility notes provided by the author.
For BG3 warlock players who love the FFXIV Dragoon fantasy and want a weapon-based, dragon-patron subclass. For those tired of Eldritch Blast spam and looking for cooperative melee synergy with a party ally. Skip if you want a pure caster warlock or aren't interested in dragon/dragoon flavor.
💡 Beginner Tips
- Install with BG3 Mod Manager: place the .pak in your Mods folder, activate in the manager, and export load order.
- After enabling, start a new game and check the Warlock subclass list for 'Firstborn Wyrm' to confirm it loaded.
- Invest in Strength or Dexterity early since the mod emphasizes weapon combat over cantrips.
