📋 About This Mod

I created this mod using the Sample Magic Ring Mod by AnteMaxx. Huge thanks to them for creating such a useful tool!

The goal of this mod is to make Darkness behave more similarly to 5e. My two biggest issues with Darkness are:

  • []It can't be used on an object, so it just creates a stationary Darkness area.

[]Even with Devil's Sight to avoid having Blindness while standing inside the Darkness area, your attacks on creatures outside the area don't have advantage despite being an unseen attacker.

Since I have nowhere near the skills needed to change the behavior of Darkness as desired, instead this mod creates a new magic ring (sold by the Skelly Trader at your camp once per long rest) that gives you two magic spells.

    • []Unlimited Darkness: allows you to cast Darkness without consuming an action or a spellslot, this can be used to move the Darkness area as many times as desired, to replicate the effects of moving an object with Darkness cast on it.

[]Unlimited Invisibility: allows you to cast Invisibility without consuming an action or a spellslot, without using concentration, and at a greater range. This allows you to cast Invisibility on yourself and your allies who are inside the Darkness area to replicate the unseen attacker benefits.

There are undoubtedly more elegant methods to achieve these changes, but this is what I could manage as my first ever mod. Since it's working for me, I figured I would share the mod in case anyone else would like to use it for some Darkness + Devil's Sight shenanigans.

      Version 1. 1

After playing around for a bit, I've found that the downside to Invisibility is that enemies usually don't even bother trying to attack you. This makes combat too trivial. So instead, I've added two additional spells to use instead:

      • []Unlimited Blur: allows you to cast Blur without consuming an action or a spellslot, without using concentration. This allows you to impose Disadvantage on incoming attacks against you without preventing them like Invisibility. The downside is that without concentration, the buff can't be easily removed if you move out of the darkness area.

[]Unlimited TrueStrike: allows you to cast TrueStrike without consuming an action, without using concentration. This allows you to gain Advantage on your attack.

The downside to using Blur is that whoever casts Darkness can't simply cast Unlimited Invisibility on all allies in the Darkness area immediately (since I can't figure out how to allow you to cast Blur on an ally). Instead, each ally has to wait until their turn in the initiative order to cast Blur on themselves. But at least this way enemies don't just stand around doing nothing.

Attempts to make Darkness behave more like 5e rules.

📊 Pros & Cons

✅ Pros

  • Tiny but dedicated following (16 endorsements) — niche fix for a specific annoyance.
  • Simple concept: one ring, one spell, no bloat.
  • Last updated January 2023 — still recent enough for most current patches.

⚠️ Cons

  • Description cuts off mid-sentence — no info on whether advantage is actually implemented.
  • Only 16 endorsements — very small user base, so expect limited testing.
🎯 Is This For You?
For BG3 players who love Darkness builds but hate the spell's limitations. If you're a tabletop purist wanting 5e-style casting, this might scratch that itch. Skip if you want a polished, well-documented mod — this one's rough around the edges.
📦 Install:Easy· Under 1 minute

💡 Beginner Tips

  • Since it's a ring, check your inventory after installing — it might be added automatically or via a vendor.
  • If you're using other spell mods, load order matters — put DarknessHack after them to avoid conflicts.
  • Test in a save before combat to see if the ring works as expected, given the incomplete description.
