1914 French Soldier

The French soldier of 1914, known as a poilu ("hairy one"), marched to war in a uniform more suited to the past than the brutal realities of modern combat. Dressed in a bright blue coat and red trousers—remnants of Napoleonic tradition—he carried a Lebel rifle with a long bayonet, his pack weighed down with essentials for the trenches. His thick mustache, a symbol of rugged endurance, framed a face soon to be hardened by mud, artillery fire, and the horrors of No Man’s Land. Full of patriotic zeal, he set off to the front believing in a quick victory, only to find himself trapped in the grinding, merciless war of attrition that defined the Western Front.
