F-14A -B Sides VF-1-

Livery briefly used by the US Navy's VF-1 "Wolfpack" on their F-14A Tomcats. For skin slot 7 and 8 for F-14A and F-14A TGM.

This is a livery for the F-14A and F-14A -TGM- depicting BuNo 159827, a Block 90 F-14A Tomcat used by VF-1 "Wolfpack".

Many F-14s in the late 1970s-through-early 1980s started to take on more austere appearances - I've heard partially since the large and colorful decorations and glossy grey-over-white scheme on early Tomcats made them very easy to visually ID. As such many squadrons backed off heavily on the color during this time. This reduction in color also corresponded with the deletion of the Insignia White bottom in newer-painted birds, leaving them in a full wraparound Gull Grey scheme.

This particular bird flown by VF-1 was a prime example. Compared to their first F-14s, which had bright red stripes along the tails and nose, nearly all deco was removed except for the tailcode and iconic Wolf's head - obviously in much smaller form than before. To my knowledge, VF-1 only utilized this scheme for less than a year in 1980-1981, before settling on a more acceptable compromise with the large tail stripes and Wolf's head returning, albeit in black with no matching nose stripe.

This livery gets its name cause it's a bit of a "B-Side" design for VF-1; everyone knows their early Tomcats, that livery style is super iconic. Barely anyone pays attention to this, though...

(I know this one is missing the pilot and RIO tags along the canopy - I couldn't find a good enough photo to discern their names and ranks.)
