🔍 WHAT THIS IS

Every texture in this overhaul was upscaled with Real-ESRGAN and then run through a custom detail-restoration pass before being reimported and repackaged with Unreal Engine 5. 4.

✔ Nothing was hand-painted, nothing was replaced with stock assets: this is the game's own art at higher resolution.

It's split into three mods:

  The upscale is not a naive "run it through an AI and ship it". A raw neural upscale drifts: it oversharpens flat surfaces, erases fine grain on noisy ones, shifts overall brightness, and softens hard alpha masks into ragged halos.

  How each artifact is explicitly corrected:

  • []Detail is rebalanced, not invented: Low frequencies come from the AI result (clean edges, straight lines), high frequencies are blended with the original's own grain and normalised to a target amplitude. Textures that were already detailed are left alone instead of being turned into sand.[/]

    []Colour is preserved: Tone is matched back to the source per channel, alpha-weighted, so surfaces keep the exact shade the artists chose. Without this, dirt, rock and carpet come out visibly darker.[/]

    []Alpha masks keep their shape: Item icons and cut-out masks were near-binary in the source and stay near-binary, so silhouettes don't get soft glowing edges. Genuinely soft alpha — smoke, glow, foliage — is left untouched.[/]

    []Formats and mip chains match the originals: Compression settings are carried over per texture, so non-colour maps and uncompressed assets aren't silently degraded.[/]

    📐 RESOLUTION RULES

    Textures are upscaled toward a 2048px ceiling, capped at 4× their original size:

    💡 Note on Decals: Decals are the exception and go up to ×8 — they're small sprites stretched across large surfaces in-game, and at ×4 they still read as pixelated.
